Get the look

This month, UK’s Marie Claire, published “The LA Issue” giving the Brits an inside glimpse of LA life. They covered Hollywood glamour and local style as well as the ins-and-outs on where to shop, eat, relax, and of course party. One of the towns most talked about residents, Nicole Richie, graces the cover and dishes about her infamous “Hollywood hellraising”. Her cover look is sweet yet sassy, with dark smoky eyes, and soft pinkish lips.

We called up renowned makeup artist, and WeLoveBeauty Stylemaker, Paul Starr, to get the step-by-step on the signature look he so famously created for her. Here’s how the day went:

THE PREP:
“As Andy was doing her hair, I prepped Nicole’s skin.” Paul said. He started by spritzing her face with Jurlique Lavender Floral Water and then used the Antioxidant Firming Face Serum by Md. Skincare, “Love it.” He then used Peter Thomas Roth, Power K Eye Rescue around her eyes, “I let it all sink in to her skin while Andy focused on her hair.”

THE FACE:
To apply her makeup Paul used an Evian spritzer on his sponge and then applied a little concealer just where she needed it, “which wasn’t much.” He uses a concealer palette by Kryolan. “They are hard to find, but if you can, they are the best.” Paul then applied Chanel’s Teint Innocence Luminous Fluid Makeup in “Naturel” all over her face.

THE BROWS:
Paul groomed her brows and then defined them using Chanel Sourcil Duo Professionnel – Professional Brow Duo.
THE EYES:
To create Nicole’s signature smoky eyes, Paul lined the upper and inner eye using Bobby Brown Long-Wear Gel Liner in “Black ”, “my favorite gel liner.” Then he took the “Black Moon” eyeliner pencil by NARS and lined the top of the lash line “pretty thick,” and then smudged it with a brush. Using a Chanel eyeshadow palette, Starr used, “a grey smoke shade all over the liner and blended it with a q-tip, smudging it all along the lash line.”

THE LASHES:
Before applying mascara, Paul curled her lashes with, “my favorite metal eyelash curler,” by Japonesque. He then gave her “LOTS of coats of mascara.” Using Chanel Inimitable black mascara, he layered her lashes with 3 or 4 coats to give her really thick, beautiful lashes.

THE CHEEKS:
To create a soft glow on Nicole’s cheek, Paul used NARS Creme Blush in “Penny Lane” all over her cheeks. Wanting to add a bit of intensity just on the apples of her cheeks, he then applied Kevin Aucoin Pure Powder Glow in “Shadore” (soft pink). Finally, “as a highlighter right on her cheek bone Paul used just a touch of Chanel Brilliance Pur in “sunkissed” (the most pale color), He also applied this to her brow bone. He explained, “You can see that it picks up the light and gives her skin that beautiful dewy look.”

THE LIPS:
To offset her eyes, Paul went with a subtle lip color, choosing Shu Uemura Beige 951 from their Rouge Unlimited collection. It is a beige with a pink undertone to it. “Typically I don’t choose pink for Nicole,” said Paul, “but in this case it looks really pretty on her.” To give the color a bit more pink and a sheer quality, he finished the look with a small amount of MAC Tinted Lip Conditioner in “Petting Pink”.
